The most salient point is the hiring of grief counselors to help people cope with the aftermath of 9/11. The rest of the world must be laughing at us for seeing the war against us as a matter of grief counseling. How dangerously weak we've become. One Nation Under Therapy is a bracing wake-up call.

I recommend this book to everyone. The helping field is not what people think. It is a form of obtaining a pay check to most employed in this field. Genuine concern, genuine compassion, and providing what is needed to help regain our client's dignity and respect, and their life back is not in the interest of most therapist.
The authors correctly realise that when we make every abhorrent, deviant, or anti-social behaviour the result of brain dysfunction or victimisation that is beyond the control of the individual, we remove personal responsibility from people's lives. Giving people an excuse for their bad behaviour is not only unfair to society, it is unfair to the individual as well because it teaches and encourages them to rationalise and accept their deviance as something they cannot help but engage in. Anyone who has spent any time working with MI or CD patients has encountered those who have learned to use their illness as a means to attempt to get what they want.

The second topic of importance in this work is the transforming of America's public schools from centres of learning into institutions focused on feelings, self-esteem, therapy, and reasons why Johnny and Suzie cannot be expected to read, write, do their sums or learn a traditional, i.e., classic, curriculum. As a result America's students consistently rank at the bottom in comparision to students in other countries. They do, however, feel very good about themselves.

In spite of criticism the authors make clear that they are not carte blanche denying that there are legitimate mental illnesses, nor that some people behave as they do because of physiological and/or cultural factors. What they take issue with is the growing tendency to eliminate personal responsibility and accountability by reducing everything to a disorder over which the person has no control save through medication and therapy. Ultimately such a practise is cruel because it produces dumbed down students and sentences countless people to live on the fringe of society or perhaps end up incarcerated because the "experts" have told them they cannot help themselves.
it is a fantastic book, it really breaks down the current issues with todays youth. if anyone is against the PC hyper sensitive agenda in college campuses, getting this book would help explain.
The book correlates well with John McKnight's THE CARELESS SOCIETY.

Psychotherapy is a racket for harvesting paying customers. That's what the profession is these days. And the way to keep people paying is to keep them sick, or make them sick. The authors confirm much of my own experience as a therapist who no longer does psychotherapy, and as a Vietnam Veteran.....many of the afflicted "Vietnam Vets" never saw Vietnam or military service. The profession is an embarrassment.

The book would be better if the writing was better and less anecdotal. But it's worthwhile reading.
I had to read this book for my college class, it was great. Very funny, and informative, i will definitely keep this on my bookshelf.

This book was a searing look into the ethos of "therapism" in modern America. The basic tenant of therapism is, simply put, that people are psychologically and emotionally fragile. School are increasingly becoming feeling-centered as apposed to knowledge-based and normal human responses to loss and crisis are readily being pathologized by health care professionals and the media. Resiliency, strength, and courage are not characteristics of those in "denial', but rather something we should teach our children and continue to uphold as American virtues.
