For a youth book, this has potential. It is a challenge to do something deeper with God and goes beyond the usual youth "preachiness" I fear in most books that dumb it down for teens. Timm does slip into youth preacher mode a bit more than I like, but his depth is also good. He is not afraid to challenge youth to get the noise out of their lives.

For anyone else, I recommend other books that can simply help with picking up key spiritual disciplines. Timm repeats himself far too much and divides subjects up into two chapters to add unneeded length.

For youth pastors, challenge your youth with some great help. This is a good starter. Please treat it just that way.

I was attracted to this book by the Title, Star Wars-like (of which I have never seen). What greeted me was a warming book of sincerity in man's pursuit of God. Eric strikes a sound balance between grace and personal responsibility. We are disciplines, correct? Our journey leads to a decision, to a new birth in God through Jesus Christ. The decision needs to lead to a life of discipleship, of following our Master.

Following means action, activity. Eric give 5 clear actions to engage in, not for salvation, but because of the salvation that is ours through Christ. He has written a book that forces the reader to consider the basics of being a discipline of God with man. A believer and seeker alike will be challenged.
Eric Samuel Timm is as easy to read and as likable as Donald Miller and as thoughtful as the great authors many of us love and look up to. The pages of this book are riddled with bits humor that make it fun to read and such profound Truths that makes you keep turning the pages. He speaks from an honest place of hard earned wisdom and teaches the reader how to get there, too, by applying 5 keys to a stronger walk and faith. The way he approaches these keys is so simple yet so profound. Everything he writes of is backed by Scripture after Scripture. It challenges you and inspires you to action. It will be a book that will be around for a long time. Truths like this don't fade with fads. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I will definitely use this book for my small group Bible study as well as read it again personally. It has already sparked countless conversations among my circle.

It's a must read for teens and adults alike from those that are new to Faith and those who have been around since organs were the cool thing in church.

This book takes a head-on look at the way so many of us believers live our daily lives. The picture of the large glass bowl with balls having various numbers painted on them, all being blown about by air forced into the glass container, with one ultimately to be chosen by the MC to find the winner for that day's game, is an apt picture of what it feels like in my head way too often--somebody shut off the blower! As disciples of Jesus Christ, we allow a lot of unnecessary noise in our lives -- even some of it good noise -- to the point that we rarely actually hear the Lord's voice and live out His word to us. Intentionality is required, which may come in various forms and choices, in order for us to lower the noise level and tune out interference and distraction, so that we can clearly hear God's voice, then make what sometimes seem like hard choices, but if submitted to will yield us the peaceable fruit of righteousness. The individual, the local church, and the larger body of Christ all stand to benefit from such choices to live as our Master, Jesus Christ.
Eric Samuel Timm is a man after my own heart. He has a similar ministry to mine in that we both paint and speak. I would count him as an influence and someone I admire. I was really excited to find out he had written a book and knew I needed to read it. It was not what I expected.

I figured I would it would be about art and creativity and in a sense it is, but its not about putting paint on canvas, it's about the art of mastering the noise that tends to drown out the voice of God in our lives. The approach to this is both creative and totally biblical. This was a perfect read for this time in my life.

The title is unusual and yet as you turn the pages, you begin to understand the concept. There is this constant barrage of noise around us, millions of signals vying for our attention. It becomes static, white noise, a total distraction. Timm then spends the rest of his book giving techniques and disciplines to overcome the noise like a Jedi.

He delves into such disciplines as rising early to get a jump on the noise, withdrawing to pray some place where you can get away from the noise and hear God, memorizing the Word so that it's hidden in your heart, fasting to gain mastery over the flesh and making disciples. He does this with wit and wisdom, great examples and illustrations and specific challenges to help the reader become a Static Jedi.

In our noisy and overcrowded, media saturated world, this is a very necessary book and I found it immensely helpful.
